How the Subscription Box Model Can Deliver HUGE Profits in 2023

Empire builders, we live in the most amazing time ever! Literally anyone can start an online business from scratch without having to invest thousands and thousands of dollars. What’s even more amazing is that there are no limits to how far you can take your eCommerce business, especially with the right strategies—like the subscription box model.

If you’re looking for an absolute game changer to boost your business’s profits overnight, it’s all about one thing: subscriptions, subscriptions, subscriptions! I’ve been saying it for a long time, and I’m still going to be banging on this drum, especially with subscription box services becoming more popular than ever. Let’s explore how subscriptions can deliver phenomenal returns and help you build your empire.

How the Subscription Box Model Makes Dropshipping Much More Profitable

Imagine if you could keep your customers coming back again and again—and even be able to predict how much they’re going to spend. That’s the reality you can enjoy by using the subscription business model; it’s one of the most amazing options for running a dropshipping business.

Instead of making just one individual sale, each purchased subscription is equal to recurring payments. This string of recurring purchases can last for six to eight months or even longer! That’s unprecedented customer loyalty. It’s also a steady income you can use to reinvest in your business or pay yourself a salary. Sounds pretty good, doesn’t it?

If you’re not familiar with subscription box services, here are the basics:

  • The customer subscribes to a recurring delivery of physical products, usually monthly.
  • The products are typically a curated collection within a specific niche, like cat toys, wellness supplements, snacks, books, beauty products… The sky’s the limit!
  • As a dropshipper, you don’t have to worry about the logistics at all. Simply choose the products, direct your supplier to prepare the boxes, and deliver them directly to the consumer.

Choosing the Right Products for a Successful Subscription Service

If you want to make the most of this fantastic business model, it’s essential to understand what customers are looking for in a subscription box. Most people will subscribe to these kinds of services for an average of around six to eight months, which will provide your business with an excellent chunk of change.

But, guess what? They’re not going to stick around for that long if they’re disappointed in the products. So what are they looking for? Customers sign up for a subscription box because they want:

  • Convenience: Instead of ordering multiple products from multiple places, they can get a great variety in one box.
  • Well-curated products: They want to be surprised and delighted by high-quality products that were handpicked just for them.
  • Value: Everybody loves a bargain, so this is definitely one of the main perks of signing up for a subscription service.
  • Unboxing experience: Getting a new subscription box in the mail is just like Christmas! Or at least, that’s how it should feel, with aesthetic packaging that’s actually fun to open.

The Right Niche Is the Solution

So, how do you make sure you can tick off all these boxes? It begins by choosing the right niche. Remember that dropshipping is all about building each of your businesses around a popular niche with eager consumers. You can’t please everybody, and it’s a mistake to even try.

Instead, choose a specialty that you’re actually interested in, research it as well as possible, and hone in on those winning products that will really sell, whether it’s fishing gear, scented candles, or gaming accessories. That’s how you provide value and build a loyal client base of subscribers coming back for more.

One of the best resources to help you get some ideas for your subscription service is the website MySubscriptionAddiction, which reviews every single box available out there. Do a search for the niche categories you’re interested in to get a concrete idea of the products already being offered to real consumers.

How to Partner With the Right Suppliers for Your Subscription Box

Screen grab of Peter Pru explaining how to find the right supplier for the subscription box model

Dropshippers are always looking for a supplier with a wide range of products. But this factor becomes EXTRA important when you’re taking advantage of the subscription box business model. You need to be able to provide customers with at least six to eight months of unique, interesting products within their niche. That means your supplier should have a large product suite with plenty of options you can mix and match to formulate your boxes.

You guys know I already have a ton of information covering every single aspect of working with suppliers, including how to vet them to find the most trustworthy partner for your business. I love to show you, my students, exactly how to navigate these suppliers, especially which ones to work with and which ones not to.

Some of the most important factors are:

Size of Your Business

If you’re just starting out, you can find great suppliers on AliExpress or CJDropshipping. These are designed for smaller operations. Once you’re ready to level up your business, Alibaba will fulfill those 2,000+ monthly subscription orders.

Variety and Niche

If you’re in the pet niche, make sure the supplier has every possible kind of specialty pet product available! This is what allows you to keep your boxes fresh throughout the whole cycle of the customer’s subscription.

Vetting

Has the supplier been in business for at least two years (or preferably longer)? What is the vendor’s response rate within 24 hours? If it’s 95% or more, you can feel confident doing business with someone you can communicate with.

Is the supplier the actual manufacturer of these products or just a trading company that’s essentially a reseller? For the best prices, you generally want to work directly with a manufacturer. The supplier’s reviews and trade assurance or trust badge will also be key for helping you find the right partner.

Services Offered

Remember that customers for subscription boxes expect an enjoyable unboxing experience. Many suppliers will work with you to provide the customer with just that. You can use resources like Lumi to create your own beautiful custom packaging and a nice insert card with your branding, which the supplier can use to assemble your boxes.

Making Your Subscription Service Popular and Profitable Long-Term

Shopper unboxing his newest subscription box

Are you ready to launch a subscription box that customers love and that generates major income? Here is one final tip that’s absolutely CRUCIAL for implementing a subscription box model. In fact, it can make the difference between just average performance and getting really phenomenal returns with the subscription box model. And it’s this: find the sweet spot for pricing.

If you’re charging the customer $29.99 a month, you don’t want to spend more than $15 on the products plus the shipping costs. You want a nice, high profit margin of 50% or more to make the most of the subscription box model. At the same time, your customer is looking for value when they sign up for a subscription box service. If they can go to the store and buy all the products for the same price, they won’t stay loyal to your service.

That means you have to focus on finding the right product, the right supplier, and the right price to hit that sweet spot for both yourself and the customer. You can also offer them discounts for paying in advance for three to six months, which is a great way to lock in those profits.

Consult With the Pros

Screen grab of Peter Pru discussing how to find ideas for subscription boxes

When it comes to making the most of dropshipping with the subscription box model, this is just the tip of the iceberg. Top 4 Hacks to See Instant Dropshipping Profits

Whether you’re experiencing success with your dropshipping business or currently struggling to get it off the ground, there are certain strategies you can use to see the instant dropshipping profits you want. Based on the success one of our clients experienced, we can show you some specific dropshipping hacks to supercharge your business and maximize profitability. Here we’ll review these hacks and how you can use them to make more money soon after implementation.

1. Optimizing Opt-in and Conversion Rates

The very first metric we want to see on someone’s sales funnel is a strong opt-in rate. If people aren’t opting in and providing email addresses and other information, then they aren’t going to make a purchase. Even if people are buying, it will be at a significantly lower rate than it should be.

Our client had a two-step order form through Clickfunnels and saw an impressive 60% opt-in rate. This is rare to see. While we don’t recommend you try to reach this number from the start with your business, it is possible to get there with enough time and effort, as this client proved. With our team of experienced professionals and plenty of tweaking, we were able to help our client reach this level, and you can, too.

In addition to a stellar opt-in rate, our client had an equally impressive 11.74% conversion rate. This is incredible compared to the average Shopify store, which sees a conversion rate of around one percent.

Together, these opt-in and conversion rates tell us that there’s nothing wrong with the client’s opt-in and landing pages.

2. Understand the Difference Between Maximizing Profits and Leads

Peter Pru discussing the importance of time and proper expectations when building a store

One point we want to emphasize here at Ecommerce Empire Builders is that you need to know the difference between maximizing profits and getting people into your sales funnel. You need to have a combination of both profits and leads.

To see instant dropshipping profits, you should have a set of profit maximizers at the ready to help you increase your average cart value. This entails creating maximizers such as:

  • Upsells
  • Order bumps
  • Subscriptions

When it came to upsells, our client saw an insanely high conversion rate of 16.28% for the first upsell. The second upsell didn’t slow things down, either, with an even higher 16.39% conversion rate.

Regarding subscriptions — we’re talking about services such as Netflix, Dollar Shave Club, and others that charge customers on a monthly basis. If you’re not using subscriptions for your business, we recommend you integrate one as soon as possible. They generate recurring revenue. Our client uses subscriptions to essentially receive free money consistently, without putting in extra work to see that steady passive income.

3. Optimize for Specific Conversion Rates

Peter Pru emphasizing how important order bumps are to creating instant dropshipping profits

It may surprise you to hear it, but we believe these numbers our client is seeing are simply too high. For most businesses, these numbers are excellent, particularly to start with when going into dropshipping. The reason we see these figures as too high here is that, ultimately, your goal is to maximize profits as a business owner. Even if things seem to be going extremely well, there are always ways to further improve and increase income.

Target 10-15% Conversion Rates for Upsells

We’re blown away by our client’s 16+% upsell conversion rates. But we’ve found that the ideal conversion rate falls at around 10 to 15%. It all depends on the structure of the funnel. Maybe your upsells consist of more of the same thing, or a premium-priced product is included with a purchase.

These extraordinarily high conversion rates could indicate that these upsells are too good of a deal for people to pass up, leading them to jump on them more frequently. In this case, we’d recommend raising the price on upsells to lower those conversions to the 10-15% range while further maximizing instant dropshipping profits.

Aim for 10% Conversion Rates for Initial Sales

We also recommended that our client raise the price of the main product to bring that 11.74% conversion rate down to the sweet spot of around 10%. Again, this may seem strange advice to hear, but the fact is that if you’re willing to lose more money to attract more people to your business, you will wind up seeing more profits. Many business owners just starting out may not want to hear that, but it’s an important lesson to learn.

If you’re seeing high conversion rates (and you’re happy with your income), you can keep things the way they are. However, if you’re disappointed with your profits, you can raise them while slightly reducing those conversion rates.

A company like Dollar Shave Club excels because while they lose money when the first subscriber comes in, they make all of those losses back because of the longevity of monthly subscriptions they maintain.

Try to Reach 18-20% Conversion Rates for Order Bumps

When looking at our client’s conversion rate for an order bump, we saw a 14.20% conversion rate that was excellent. Generally, we recommend targeting an order bump rate of around the 18% to 20% range. Order bumps are pre-purchase upsells that customers are likely to add to their cart without much thought. These could include add-ons and other minor purchases that enhance that main purchase before buying.

Unfortunately, many businesses lose a considerable amount of money because they neglect to use an order bump.

4. Knowing What Offers to Consider to See Instant Dropshipping Profits

If you’re unsure what you should be offering your customers, whether it’s a deep discount or another offer, here are some of the different routes you can take.

A “Free Plus Shipping” Offer

In many cases, you’re often better off making a “free plus shipping” offer. These offers are typically safe to go with. But keep in mind that a properly built back-end is vital to get the most from this offer. This is because this offer causes a slight loss of income on the initial sale. But you can make up for that with upsells and other profit maximizers.

A Deep Discount Offer

Deep discount offers are ideal if you’re using Facebook ads. The platform may not accept ads that make “free plus shipping” offers. In fact, we tend to use deep discount offers for our clients in lieu of “free plus shipping” because it’s usually the safer option of the two. For Facebook ads, we suggest you use video ads that maximize engagement. You can also use image ads that can supplement those video ads.

Work With the Pros to Get the Most From Your Store

How to Make Money Online in 2021 With This Free Clickfunnels Template

Regardless of what you’re selling online, sales funnels are the key to a successful ecommerce business. However, many entrepreneurs just starting out aren’t sure how to set up their funnels, or they’re wary about trying them. The fact is that, without a proper sales funnel in place, you’re going to struggle. To help you get started, we’ll go over how to stage your business for success with our free Clickfunnels template. You can download this sales funnel today and make it your own.

Start With the Squeeze Page

When you’re running any kind of online store, there are many aspects to think about as you get started. The advantage of a sales funnel is that it redirects your focus to the person you’re selling to instead of the storefront itself. As you first get into sales funnels, you’ll want to begin with the squeeze page. This is a landing page or opt-in page that hooks people into the sales funnel.

What Squeeze Pages Do

In short, the squeeze page is the page that you send your customers to when they’re about to order your products. In our free Clickfunnels template, our squeeze page sells a “Shooting Trainer” that basketball players can use to work on their shooting skills. You might bring people to your squeeze page from Facebook ads, Instagram ads, or other sources. The page will highlight a single product instead of a bunch of them. This helps ensure you connect with a specific audience. As a result, if someone isn’t interested in this particular product, they’ll be likely to click away. But active shoppers stay on the page.

How to Set Up an Effective Squeeze Page

Screen grab of Peter Pru discussing a squeeze page in a free Clickfunnels template

Ultimately, you’ll want your squeeze page to get people to become leads during the first step. This means entering shipping information such as their name, address, phone number, and email address. After submitting their information, people will be in your database, allowing you to contact them later.

Once they’ve opted in during Step 1, they’ll enter Step 2, which will allow them to select a specific product and enter billing info to complete their order. For example, in our free Clickfunnels template, people can choose to buy one or two basketball trainers through our offer. You can use Step 2 to list quantity breaks and discounts; highlight appealing offers to further drive sales for greater quantities of products.

Additionally, we have a one-time offer of an ebook download below the billing info. It’s a “Basketball Mastery Guide,” which makes it easy for customers to add this to their order. This is essentially free money for us: the ebook cost us no more than $10 once, and we can repeatedly sell it for $15 to multiple customers through this order bump.

Remember the Real Purpose of a Sales Funnel

As you develop your squeeze page, keep in mind that the main purpose of a sales funnel is to generate assets for your business. This primarily consists of emails and phone numbers that enable you to promote new products and other offers. Secondly, you’ll want to use your funnels to maximize the average cart value by getting people to spend as much as possible on initial sales. This is huge for helping keep up with the costs of maintaining your business. Finally, your funnel should also maximize the overall lifetime value (LTV) through repeat sales, which generate consistent, predictable revenue.

Take Customers to an Upsell Page

Once customers have completed their order on the squeeze page, it’s time to lead them to your first upsell page. Don’t feel limited to one or two upsells, either. You can lead people to as many upsells as you want, all of which are one-click opportunities that make it easy to add more items to their order instantly. While people can choose not to add these items, many people are likely to be interested in purchasing additional products if they’re relevant to their initial order.

With more upsells comes a bigger increase in the average cart value. This can lead to increased revenue that you can then use to improve your ad campaigns. This will give you even more of a competitive edge. It’s important to remember the adage: “He who can spend the most to acquire customers wins.” With ample upsells and a maximized average cart value, you’ll be able to afford more ads that flush out the competition.

In our free Clickfunnels template, we’ve included two upsell pages: one for a “Limited Edition Shooting Strap” that corrects posture, and one for a pair of “Pro Skill Trainer Gloves” that allow for a better grip. Both of these go toward boosting the value of the average cart when people buy our Shooting Trainer through the squeeze page.

Offer a Form of Continuity to Maximize LTV

Ecommerce business owner creating a sales funnel

As we mentioned, the main goal of a sales funnel is to generate assets in the form of leads. All cold traffic should go through a sales funnel regardless of what you’re selling, with focus areas on specific products that attract equally specific audiences. First, you can maximize the average cart value through initial sales and upsells. Then you can conclude with continuity that maximizes the lifetime value of your customers. Once you’ve made that initial sale, you need to keep customers coming back to you with some type of continuity.

Continuity could include subscription boxes, digital memberships, and other offers that help generate income on a yearly or monthly basis. In our free Clickfunnels template, we create continuity in the form of a one-click upsell. People can pay $14.97 a month for weekly industry secrets that can improve their basketball training. That adds up to impressive compound interest that keeps the money coming in.

Subscription boxes are always a great option here if you’re offering physical products. You can work with a supplier like AliExpress to put together your boxes and ship them to customers.

Regardless of the subscription you implement, a focus on continuity is vital for generating consistent revenue and enabling your business to grow without the need to spend more on ads.

Complete the Funnel With a Thank You Page

After taking people through your squeeze pages, upsells, and continuity offers, you can complete the interaction with a “thank you” page. But this page can include more than an order confirmation and a message thanking customers. It can also include additional affiliate offers or links to Shopify stores, further boosting sales.

Get the Results You Want With a Reliable Sales Funnel

We encourage you to try this free Clickfunnels template with your bestselling products and see how well they perform. With a complete sales funnel that includes a squeeze page, multiple upsells, and continuity, you can see a significant increase in:

  • Conversions
  • Initial sales
  • Long-term customer relationships

Subsequently, you’ll have more money to spend on supercharging your marketing. You can stay ahead of competitors in an increasingly saturated market.

2021 Dropshipping Trends That Can Lead to Overnight Success

The main reason why many people don’t succeed with their dropshipping business is that they don’t implement the most profitable practices. However, there are certain trends that can lead to overnight profitability when effectively used. Some ecommerce entrepreneurs go into this industry and start making a lot of money. Many others may wonder what they’re doing wrong as they experience disappointment from the start. We’ll go over some of the biggest 2021 dropshipping trends to help your business excel.

The Importance of Subscriptions

One of the key 2021 dropshipping trends is the use of subscriptions. So many dropshippers fail simply because they’re not incorporating subscriptions into their business model. The advantage of a subscription is that it provides consistent, predictable revenue that can compensate for other less reliable sales. If you can get dozens or even hundreds of people subscribing to your business every month, that’s free revenue that you can get right from the start.

The subscription box industry is only going to continue growing: A McKinsey study found that the industry went from $57 million in 2011 to over $2.6 billion in 2016, a tremendous growth within a mere 5 years. Since then, the market has expanded to over $10 billion as of 2019.

One of the clearest 2020 and 2021 dropshipping trends is that subscription boxes are extremely lucrative. The problem that a lot of people have is deciding what to include in their subscriptions. This keeps them from implementing them. The fact is that all you need for a successful subscription is a solid value offer.

In short, as long as the value of the box outweighs what your customers actually pay for it, your subscription will likely succeed.

Start by Googling Your Niche

Many of the top 2021 dropshipping trends are rooted in good research. You can begin building your subscription by searching for similar boxes in your niche. All you need to do is go to Google and type “subscription boxes,” followed by whatever topic you want to cover. For instance, you could search for “subscription boxes survival” to find boxes in the survival niche. These boxes would include various types of survival gear. If there aren’t many options to choose from, you may need to target another niche. But the more results you see for your search, the more lucrative the opportunity will be.

Keep a lookout for PPC ads in the top results for a given niche. This indicates that businesses are making enough money in that niche to spend on high-ranking search ads instead of relying on organic search results.

Once you’ve found other subscriptions in your industry, the next step is to find out what other sellers are doing to succeed with these boxes. Visit their websites and take a look at their products and overarching themes, along with the packaging. You’ll want to find out what kind of value these businesses are bringing to customers, which you can then adapt for your business. You can gain key insight into 2021 dropshipping trends from your competitors.

Highlight the Value Included in Your Physical Subscription and Make That the Focus

Screen grab of Peter Pru discussing how to position subscription box pricing

When selling any kind of physical subscription box, it’s important to detail the value included with each box. Also, include how much the customer is saving with the subscription.

Ultimately, value supersedes perfection with every subscription box. While many may perceive perfection as worth striving for with every shipment — by optimizing presentation to complement the value of the products — this can actually hinder rather than help your business. Unfortunately, many businesses fail because they spend too much time on making their subscription boxes perfect when they should actually be selling. People care about what’s included in the box, not the box itself, so don’t waste too much time on pretty packaging and other aspects of presentation when contents matter most. Once you’ve gotten to the point where you have over 100 subscribers, you can then strive for the perfect box now that your subscription is off the ground.

Locate Products and Suppliers on AliExpress

Screen grab of Peter Pru discussing how to choose a supplier

With the ideal subscription box chosen, use AliExpress to find specific products and suppliers. Try to find a solitary supplier that can provide you with all of the products you need within your niche. This can help you save some time finding individual products and compiling them in your subscription. A single supplier can also serve as a reliable source.

While on AliExpress, browse different suppliers’ stores and find out what they specifically offer. You’re looking for a supplier that can offer a 50% profit margin. This means that if subscribers are paying around $15 per month, the subscription box should include items that cost you around $7.50 to buy and ship. If needed, you can throw in some digital products to help boost profit margins. For each subscription box, look for around three to four products that you can ship collectively at an affordable price. This can further ensure profitability.

Find Suppliers on Alibaba if You’re More Established

Has your business had a chance to grow, with a bigger budget to work with and a more established brand? Alibaba can give you some more ideas for subscription boxes and enable you to find the perfect supplier. You can then investigate any suppliers you come across until you locate one worth reaching out to. From there, you can send a message to request product catalogs or brochures, which should also indicate pricing.

Once you’ve chosen a supplier, the next step is to develop a calendar. While you can use a six-month calendar, we recommend developing a one-year calendar. Why? Because most customers won’t spend more than a year on a subscription. Using this calendar, you can decide on which products to place into each shipment for a year. Once the year ends, the calendar could restart. Then you can send some of the same products to customers as the start of the previous year, seeing as most of those customers will be newer at that point.

Package Subscription Boxes Yourself at the Start

Dropshipper contacting suppliers to streamline his business

Having selected the right products and suppliers for your subscription, you can begin constructing your boxes and selling them. Until you reach 100 subscribers, we recommend avoiding using fulfillment centers to put your boxes together. Instead, you’ll be able to save a lot of money by building your own subscription boxes. It may take a lot of time and feel like a waste of it, but you’ll be saving a lot of money, and you can always get friends and family to help. You can even turn your boxing sessions into an event, ordering some food and drinks to make it feel less like a hassle for everyone involved.

With over 500 subscribers, a fulfillment center will likely be worth the price. Fulfillment centers may also help organize shipments with suppliers and simplify the entire process.

If you can harness the power of subscriptions from the start of your dropshipping venture, you’ll be able to succeed throughout 2021 and the coming years. If you can locate the ideal niche, products, and suppliers, you’ll be able to develop a winning subscription plan that customers love. In turn, you’ll see consistent, regular income. Top 2021 Dropshipping Trends to Follow for Overnight Success

A lot of dropshippers start a business and fail because, among other things, they’re not incorporating the latest trends into their business. If you want to ensure your dropshipping business has the chance to succeed, incorporate these 2021 dropshipping trends. By following the right trends and using them to inform your strategies, you can make your store profitable overnight.

Here we’ll review some of the biggest 2021 dropshipping trends so far, which you can use to build a successful business.

Adding Subscriptions

The main reason why so many dropshipping businesses fail is that they neglect to add subscriptions. Subscriptions can make it easy for businesses to maximize customer lifetime value (CLV) and encourage repeat sales while maximizing predictability. That’s why they’re one of the most important 2021 dropshipping trends. If you want to generate a steady and predictable revenue stream on a yearly, monthly, or even weekly basis, subscriptions can be the key. All you need to do to create a successful subscription is to have a good value offer. If the value of what you give to customers outweighs the cost, people will keep coming to you for those products.

According to marketing firm McKinsey, revenue from the subscription box industry increased dramatically from $57 million in 2011 to over $2.6 billion by 2016. Over the next five years, those figures have increased even more into 2021. The love for subscription boxes is far from fading.

Look for Other Subscriptions in Your Niche to Get Ideas

Screen shot of Peter Pru discussing how to find good subscription box niches

You can start developing your own subscription by finding out what subscription boxes exist in your niche. Simply Google “[your niche] subscription boxes” and see what comes up for that search. If the options are minimal, this may not be the best niche. But if you perform a search and see plenty of results, this means there’s money in that niche. This is especially true if you see ads show up as the first results.

Why is this a clue? Because no business will pay for PPC ads in top results if they’re not making a profit.

The next step is to see what other successful businesses are doing to sell those subscription boxes. Take a look at their websites and find out what products they include, along with themes for each box and packaging. Determine what value they’re bringing to their customers, which can translate to your own subscription.

Always Highlight the Value You Offer With Physical Subscription Boxes

Keep in mind that there is one additional strategy you need to implement when selling physical boxes. Whenever you sell a physical subscription box, you should always detail the value that’s included with each box. Also, include how much they’re saving with a subscription. However, for digital products, you generally don’t need to be as competitive with your pricing.

Focus on Value Over Perfection

At the end of the day, when starting out with your subscription, try to avoid making it as perfect as possible. Many businesses strive for perfection because it makes them feel good to put together the most ideal presentation, but this can hurt your business rather than help it. One of the reasons why so many businesses fail when starting out is because they focus on creating the “perfect” subscription and making things complex instead of selling their products. Instead of directing all your attention to putting together the perfect subscription, focus on the value you bring and simply providing customers with a mix of high-quality products. As your business begins to grow and you reach your first 100 subscribers, then you can work on perfecting subscriptions.

Using AliExpress to Find Subscription Products and Suppliers

Screenshot of Peter Pru checking an AliExpress supplier's store

Once you have a subscription box in mind and you know how to approach it, you can begin looking for products and a supplier on AliExpress. On AliExpress, you’ll want to look for a single supplier that provides a ton of products in your niche. You don’t have to look for individual products and put them together in a subscription. Just find that one supplier, and you’re good to go.

Check out different suppliers’ stores while browsing AliExpress and see what kinds of products they offer. What you need to find is something that you can offer with a 50% profit margin. For example, if your subscribers are paying $20 per month, make sure your box includes products that you can ship to customers for around $10. If you need to, we recommend adding some digital products to those subscriptions when possible to improve your margins.

You should be able to find three to four products that you can ship together at an affordable price that enables you to earn a profit that makes it worthwhile.

For More Established Brands: Finding Suppliers Through Alibaba

When your business has grown and you have a sufficient budget along with a developed brand, head over to Alibaba to get some ideas for a subscription box and to locate a supplier. Find the right supplier, and take some time to review them. Then you can send a message requesting brochures or catalogs of their products and pricing.

With a supplier backing your subscription, you need to put together a calendar. (Organization is also one of the top 2021 dropshipping trends.) You can create a six-month calendar. But we suggest a one-year calendar considering most customers won’t likely stay with any subscription for more than a year. Based on that calendar, you can determine which products to include with each shipment so that you have a specific plan in place. After that calendar period, you can then cycle through your past subscription boxes. You’ll likely be sending them to newer customers as old ones leave.

2021 Dropshipping Trends: DIY Subscription Boxes vs. Fulfillment Centers

Happy woman opening a subscription box

After you’ve found and connected with the right supplier, you can begin putting your subscription boxes together and pricing them. If you have under 100 subscribers, you can save some money by putting your subscription boxes together on your own. You can make it a party. Invite some friends or family to join you. Order delivery and turn it into a fun event that makes it feel more worth your time. Ultimately, you can save a lot of money this way when starting out.

Once you’ve reached over 500 subscribers, you can then transfer packaging to a fulfillment warehouse. That service will be able to work out the logistics with suppliers and further simplify things for you.

With a subscription behind your dropshipping business, you can achieve the level of success you want in 2021. Finding the right products and suppliers can help you put together a subscription plan that your customers will love. This will provide predictable, consistent income. Hack Your Sales Funnel and Turn $10 Into $100 With Dropshipping

Empire builders, not only is it possible to turn $10 to $100 with your ecommerce business, but you can do it again and again. Ecommerce and dropshipping are great opportunities to predictably expand your profits, week by week. Learn how to hack your sales funnel for more streamlined — and repeatable — profits.

How It’s Commonly Done

When it comes to ecommerce and dropshipping, there’s a pattern that most entrepreneurs use in order to sell their product. This usually involves increasing traffic to their website and to a single product through advertising, social media, influencer promotion, and whatever other means suit their product. This is a service that is paid for and therefore cuts into profit margins.

Take a company that sells their merchandise for $20. Increasing traffic to their website, and therefore getting a consumer to look at their product, will generally cost around $10. Now, this initially seems like a great deal. They just made $10.

However, this isn’t looking at the bigger picture. The initial potential for revenue is $20. This is immediately halved due to the cost of advertisements and increasing traffic. Then, you also have to take into account the cost of the product, as this is an example involved with dropshipping a physical product.

Even if the product and shipping costs only come to $5, the company is left with a net of $5. That’s not exactly a number that inspires, and this is what scares people always from starting their empire. There’s an easier way to make a profit right away and create a successful dropshipping business.

A Better Way: Hack Your Sales Funnel

Screen grab of Peter Pru explaining how upselling can change net profits

The key is controlling the narrative and how much you’re able to make. Let’s look at this another way, but with the exact same initial setup. You start with a product that has a potential revenue of $20, and the cost of advertising is still $10. This is where I want to mix things up and introduce something new.

We don’t want to just leave things as they currently stand, with the potential to make $5. We want to grow this potential.

To do that, I’m going to add a simple one-click upsell — nothing too complicated or technical. If you want to dive into the meat of why this works, I’ve extensively covered the topic before. If you want to learn how I took a brand-new business and turned $0 to $1000 a day in only three days, click here

How to Add an Upsell to Your Sales Funnel

For our purposes now, just view the upsell as an opportunity for your business to make more money without spending more on additional advertising. It basically allows a customer to buy more of your product and to do so easily. This is important for any business, no matter what you’re selling or in what format.

Your first sale is likely not going to amount to much of a profit. In fact, even the previous example is optimistic. Breaking even is a pretty good goal when you’re first starting out. So, if you offer a $40 upsell, then your revenue just jumped up to $60. After subtracting $10 for advertising and maybe $20 for the cost of goods, your net is now $30. That’s a lot better than $5.

While not every customer is going to purchase your upsell, you’re allowing yourself the opportunity to make more money per sale, and some consumers will decide to go for it. The best part is, the potential doesn’t stop there. You can customize this funnel and how things sell to fit your company’s needs.

You don’t have to just have one upsell. The first sale you make, once a consumer decides to use their money on your product, dictates the rest of your profits. Once you learn this, it’s almost like magic.

Subscription-Based Sales Funnels

Screen grab of Peter Pru discussing the value of subscription offers

That first sale you make — our $20 example — is going to be the hardest. It’s also going to be the most important, as all the pieces start from that sale and are put together to maximize your profits. The amount you’re going to make all stems from what you do behind the scenes.

In this subscription-based sales funnel method, things start in the same way. You have your traffic coming into your store for your front-end product. However, this time visualize an order form, which is where someone buys something from your store. Your $20 product will be on this order form. Then, you’re going to want to implement the following hacks to increase the amount of product a single customer will buy from you, or your average cart value:

Step One to Hack Your Sales Funnel: Encourage Bigger Buys

My first suggestion is to add quantity discounts. If a consumer buys 4, or 6 of your products, they should get a discount. You might be questioning if anyone would actually buy multiples, but studies show they do. People love a good deal. Take advantage of this and offer a better discount as the quantity goes up. It’s going to make you more money by increasing the likelihood that more of your product will sell to a single customer.

Step Two to Hack Your Sales Funnel: Create Order Bumps

Next, consider adding something called an order bump right under your front-end product. This is basically a no-brainer you offer a customer to buy alongside your product. Your local grocery store already does this by enticing you with little treats as they’re ringing up your groceries. Think about how often you take advantage of those.

If you’re a company selling toothbrushes, your order bump would be toothpaste. Why wouldn’t a consumer take advantage? When they do, that’s more money for you. This can help you break even or make a profit from the very start. Then, you can move to other tactics.

To summarize steps one and two: I recommend offering more of what they just bought at a discounted price and then a complementary product. This is any product customers frequently buy alongside your type of primary product, and you can easily figure out what this product might be through Amazon. Make sure you’re giving them a good deal on the product as well. Offering these two upsells should be simple, allowing the customer to either choose yes or no and then move on.

They won’t have to navigate throughout the website or click through multiple pages. They can buy lots of your products with two clicks, as there are no cart pages. That’s the beauty of this funnel.

Step Three to Hack Your Sales Funnel: Create Subscription Upsell Sequences

Happy customer opening a subscription box package

The third upsell is key. I refer to this upsell as the continuity upsell, and it’s the subscription aspect of your funnel. Offer your customers a monthly incentive, such as a subscription box or digital access. This will give you recurring revenue and a loyal customer base. Here’s more information about subscriptions, because they really are gold for your company. The subscription upsell should be another one-click option, and customers automatically get billed. Aim for a 50% margin here, as this is where you’ll want to pay yourself and invest in other assets for your company. Always, always, always offer a subscription option!

Here’s something else to keep in mind. When you pay for advertisements on Facebook, you’re not paying for customers. You’re paying for data that will help you understand more about what consumers want. A simple upsell sequence will help you get more of that data and make more money. It’s easy, fast, and beneficial for someone’s first business.

Hack Your Sales Funnel and Grow Your Business Faster

When you put all of these pieces together, you can really start to see a potential for great profit. The original example of $5 in net profit can easily be turned into hundreds if not thousands of dollars when you implement these funnels and sequences. Increase Dropshipping Sales Without Paying for Ads

If you want to increase dropshipping sales without running a paid advertising campaign, read on. There are ways to easily multiply your sales by using subscriptions. Many people who go into eCommerce fail because of a lack of one major component: predictability. It’s easy to get excited when you start making those first sales through dropshipping. But then you have to handle shipping, product costs, and other expenses until you have barely any money left over. Without that predictability, you’re less likely to appeal to customers and encourage sales.

Using Subscription Services to Increase Dropshipping Sales With Predictability

One of the best ways to bring predictability to your business is to implement subscription services. If people know what to expect with your business on a regular basis with a repeat subscription — and the same customers keep buying from you on a weekly or monthly basis — you’re much more likely to both attract and retain more customers. Consider how many subscription-based businesses have become successful, from Dollar Shave Club to Disney+. The reason a company like Dollar Shave Club was able to sell for billions of dollars was that it had predictable revenue. People don’t want to invest in businesses that only drive one-time sales.

Keep in mind that you need to do more than simply add a subscription to your business. Think about specifically how you intend to sell the subscription. The following guide will help you start using subscriptions to increase dropshipping sales.

Step 1: Get Inspired

Screen grab of how to find product ideas through subscription box reviews

The very first thing you need to do when adding subscriptions to your business is to get inspired. You won’t be able to implement a subscription if you don’t have some ideas to help you get started. Regardless of whether you currently have a dropshipping business, you should take some time to see what people are doing and incorporate some of those ideas into your own business model.

One of the best ways to get some ideas is to visit MySubscriptionAddiction.com, which is a blog that publishes reviews of just about every subscription box out there. While the site consists of reviews, it’s not the reviews themselves you’ll be looking at. Instead, look at what some of these boxes are offering. Get some ideas for products that look like they will help you increase dropshipping sales. Based on the niche you want to target, you can locate a box with relevant products and see if something similar is worth including in yours.

For example, you may find a cool-looking arts and crafts box that’s intended for people of all ages. This can help you develop your own arts and crafts subscription box if you want to target this particular niche.

Step 2: Choose Products for Your Box

After you’ve gotten some ideas for your own subscription box while browsing MySubscriptionAddiction.com or other sources, you can begin looking for some products to sell.

Let’s take the arts and crafts example. Once you’ve decided that you want to cover this niche after seeing an example, check out Alibaba.com. In the search bar at the top of the page, you could conduct a search for arts and crafts. From there, you may see a list of a wide range of products in this niche, such as decorative wood figures that your customers could put together. It’s easy to get lost in the many products available, especially since so many of the options can help you increase dropshipping sales. So feel free to take some time to browse and find the perfect product for your business.

Step 3: Look at the Supplier

Dropshipper calling a supplier in an independent meeting

Even if the product looks good and you’re ready to add it to your subscription, take a close look at the supplier. You can’t increase dropshipping sales without a supplier who can keep up. Your supplier should be reputable and well-liked, as you’re likely to be working with this supplier for years on end. On Alibaba, you can look at the supplier’s star rating. This metric grades suppliers on a 5-star scale based on service, on-time delivery, and product quality. A star rating of 4.5 or higher is generally great.

You should also check to see if the supplier has regular transactions. You can see the total dollar amount of transactions per a certain number of transactions over a period of time.

Finally, look at the supplier’s response rate, which is crucial. If it’s hard to get ahold of your supplier, you’re going to have a difficult time working with them to sell their products through your subscription. A good response rate is around 80% or higher. This indicates that the supplier is very quick to respond and won’t leave you in the dark at any point.

Pay Attention to the Business’s Details

Also, find out how long the supplier has been on Alibaba. You may find that while a supplier looks great, with a high star rating, fast response time, and an ideal location like the United States, the supplier has only been on the website for a year. In most cases, you’ll likely want to avoid suppliers that haven’t been on Alibaba for very long. The website has been around for a long time, and good, well-established suppliers are likely well aware of this platform. So there’s generally not a good reason for them to not be established.

However, you may find a supplier that, while not having been on the site for long, is verified. In these cases, it may be worth trusting a supplier that’s relatively new to the platform.

Look Carefully at Their Alibaba Page

Once you’ve found what looks like a good supplier, visit their company page on Alibaba and learn more about them before reaching out. Keep in mind that when contacting a supplier, don’t rely on Alibaba’s website’s live chat or other on-site communication. Try to get them to contact you via phone, Skype, email, or other third-party channels.

The most important item to look at on their company page before contacting them is Business Type. Here, it should always say Manufacturer. If it only says Trading Company, skip over this supplier. Trading companies essentially act as unnecessary middlemen between you and the manufacturer. Instead, it’s best to work directly with a manufacturer when possible.

You can also see other details such as how long they’ve been in business, the number of employees they have, certifications, and more to help you make your decision.

Step 4: Reach Out to the Supplier

After finding that perfect product and ideal supplier, don’t click that “Start Order” button just yet. You’ll wind up being overcharged. Instead, negotiate with the supplier when you contact them and try to work out the best possible deal.

Also, ask for a product catalog, which the supplier should always be willing to send. You should then receive a massive PDF or another file that could give you an endless number of ideas for products to sell in your subscription.

When contacting a supplier, always stress that you’re looking to establish a long-term relationship with them. This will encourage them to do business with you as a reliable seller.

Step 5: Choose a Fulfillment Center

Screen grab of discussing fulfillment service providers

With a product and supplier chosen, you’ll want to ship products to a fulfillment center. There are several fulfillment centers that you can choose from, including:

  • Dollar Fulfillment
  • ShipOffers
  • ShipZOOM

In some cases, your supplier could also fulfill orders for you. Regardless of how you go about it, the fulfillment center will package and ship your subscription boxes on your behalf.

Step 6: Select Packaging Options

Some fulfillment centers will provide packaging options in addition to fulfillment. Otherwise, you will need to seek other packaging options.

If you want to use custom boxes that feature cool and unique designs for your subscriptions, we recommend you go through Lumi. Simply visit their catalog page from the main navigation menu, and take a look. Their Corrugated Mailer Boxes, for example, are great for most subscription boxes.

If you have under 1,000 subscribers at this point, we don’t recommend getting a custom box. Using a plain box design without any writing on it is often best to start with. Wait until it’s worth the cost to upgrade to a custom design. Most customers will care more about what’s inside of the box instead of the exterior. So don’t spring for a custom box if you don’t need it.

The fulfillment center will also take care of all the logistics for packaging. All you need to do is tell them what you want, and they’ll do the rest.

Step 7: Build a Sales Funnel to Increase Dropshipping Sales

When it comes to actually selling your subscription box, you don’t want to rely on Facebook ads. Why? Because you’ll quickly find that those ads don’t perform the best on their own. People are more likely to see your box as just another monthly bill that they have to pay if you don’t sell it effectively.

Rather than relying on generic ad campaigns, the best way to sell your subscription is to develop a sales funnel. Start by leading people in with an inexpensive one-time product, which gives your customers value. From there, you can upsell them with your subscription box. This way, you’ll be paying social media advertising platforms for a sale rather than for a monthly subscription.

Through an effective sales funnel, you’ll be able to increase dropshipping sales of your main product and your subscriptions. This can boost your revenue without the need to pay for costly ad campaigns or other expenses. How to Assess and Build Great Subscription Box Offers

Empire builders, are you looking for ways to increase your ecommerce business revenue?  Adding subscription boxes to your dropshipping business can earn you extra revenue. Read on to learn more about how you can build great subscription box offers that you can easily add to your dropshipping business.

How to Grow Your Dropshipping Business With Subscription Boxes

I have realized that many people who are starting out on ecommerce and dropshipping miss out on the opportunity to make extra money. However, having some kind of monthly program like a subscription box can help you get some free money.

Here is my advice on how to find and add these subscription boxes:

1. See How Other Businesses Build Great Subscription Box Offers

screen grab of the process to start researching niche subscription offers

The first step is to do some research to see what kind of subscriptions are out there. Make sure you do not go too niche-specific — you want to get a lot of search results.

Research will give you great ideas and help you know what the actual offer is. The information you gather will come in handy when deciding what you need to offer to charge the kind of prices that others charge. In my view, you should not provide customers with too many options in terms of subscription. In fact, I would recommend a maximum of two options.

2. Focus on Value

Generally, people find value in the things that they enjoy doing. To get people to sign up for your subscription program, you have to make sure that you provide value. Tell your customers exactly what they will be getting for their money. Because people will always want more value in a box, you want to make sure that the value you offer outweighs what they spend.

We all have so many subscriptions to a variety of things and will remain on the subscription plan as long as we keep getting value. For instance, I am subscribed to a toothbrush company that sends me a new toothbrush with a battery every two to three months for about five to ten dollars. This saves me a lot of time and the trouble of having to think about it. When it comes to value, be sure to offer at least the average of what others in your niche are delivering to customers.

3. Focus on Simplicity and Functionality

As you work on adding subscription boxes, keep your offer easy and simple. A simple subscription plan will be less confusing to your customers and save you a lot of headaches down the line. Remember: confused customers never buy.

In the end, a clear message will also help you attract higher numbers. When looking at the different subscriptions that are available, you should compare them to find out who is giving the most value. When you’re working with an online retail service like AliExpress, make sure you find a supplier who will pack and ship it for you.

Pro Tip: Always Use High-Quality Images and Video

screen grab of an example subscription box page with good images

I always like it when businesses make proper use of images in their subscriptions. Images will play a big part in helping you show your customers what they will get when they sign up for your subscription plan. Try to use high-quality images to show them what is inside the box to raise your perceived value and come across as a valid business.

Another way to make the most of subscription boxes is to show people the experience of how it feels like to buy from you and open the box. You can do this by using images creatively and including an unboxing video that reviews the different products people will get. To create a high perceived value, I would suggest you get an influencer to create the videos for you rather than doing it yourself. Simply send the box to your influencer and describe the kind of unboxing video you would like for your advertisement.

When it comes to the subscription box game, you do not want to simply own a subscription box. These tips are actually designed for those who want to upsell subscriptions for growth. As an ecommerce empire builder, you should avoid selling subscriptions on the front end OR competing on price. Instead, focus on providing the value that your customers desire.

What to Know If You Are New to Ecommerce Empire Builders

man starting to research and build great subscription box offers

If you are new to Ecommerce Empire Builders, I would like to repeat that selling your subscription on the front end can make it difficult for you to be profitable. Because you will be competing with many people, you may want to focus on getting that first “yes.” My advice would be to build out a funnel and have a great front-end product to get your first purchase before upselling the subscription. This way, you will make money from the first sale and also get monthly subscribers in a cost-effective way.

In summary, the first thing you need to understand is that people are looking for more value in a box. My advice to you would be to take time and look at different subscription boxes in your specific niche to get an idea of the value they are offering in the boxes. This information will help you determine how much value you need to build great subscription box offers.

A useful rule of thumb is to double the value or make it between $10 and $15 more than what they are paying to ensure that subscription boxes work for your business. Consider having your supplier send the packed products in a box so you can see the finished product for yourself.

How to Start a Subscription Box Business and Triple Your Profits in 2020

One of the easiest ways to increase your profits via ecommerce is to create recurring revenue. You can do that through the sales of subscription boxes. Many people who get into dropshipping miss out on the chance to maximize income because they don’t take advantage of opportunities to generate recurring revenue. Get started by reading (and watching) the Ecommerce Empire Builders guide on how to start a subscription box business.

How to Find Subscription Boxes That Help Dramatically Boost Profits

Subscription plans can essentially help you earn free money by encouraging people to make repeat purchases on a regular basis. The key is knowing where to look for those lucrative subscription boxes that are likely to be worth the investment.

Start With a General Search

One of the best places to start your search for the ideal subscription box is Google. Simply conduct a Google search around “subscription boxes” and your specific niche. For instance, you might search “hiking subscription boxes,” which may yield many results to review. If you don’t see a lot of results in your search, this could indicate that you’re narrowing down your search too much. It’s best to keep things relevant but relatively broad.

Remember: just like with products, it’s important to choose competitive subscription box niches. Don’t complicate the process of how to start a subscription box business by trying to break new ground.

Look Through Affiliate Posts

screen grab of looking through affiliate marketing lists for high-quality example boxes as part of how to start a subscription box business

You may come across a result that features an affiliate blog listing the “top subscription boxes” in your specific niche. You can look through the list for ideas for which subscription boxes are the best models of what to sell to your customers. While you might believe that people aren’t likely to spend upwards of hundreds of dollars on a monthly basis for a subscription box, you’d be mistaken. In fact, particularly in hobby niches, people love to spend money on what they love doing, be it hiking or another activity that they’ll always enjoy. This holds true regardless of the state of the economy.

Examine the Actual Boxes

Take a look at an individual subscription box and determine what they offer in each box, along with the pricing structure. A good subscription box will offer around two to three plans at most. This keeps things simple, and that’s more likely to encourage prospective customers to make a commitment.

One big selling point is the retail value included in the subscription box. This should be clearly displayed on the merchant’s page. The value should always outweigh what the customer pays, which truly shows that the box is worth the investment. However, this is very different from competing on price. Watch this breakdown of the secret to subscription box profitability.

Why It’s Often Best to Sell Physical Products

Many people prefer to subscribe to subscription boxes that make it easier to get what they want or need without putting much thought into it. For instance, you might be subscribed to a shaving kit subscription box, which keeps you stocked with high-quality shaving supplies. Now, you don’t have to think about going to the store or manually choosing your shaving products. At the same time, the retail value in each box outweighs what you actually end up paying per month.

This is why it’s often easiest to sell physical products over services through subscription plans. The key to how to start a subscription box business and be successful is to always think about what the customer needs.

Regardless of which plan you consider, look at multiple options and determine which subscription offers the best value and can attract the most customers.

Take a Look at Examples to Better Gauge the Value

When looking at the various subscription boxes out there, examine your potential competitors in depth. Do what you can to find examples of boxes that show precisely how much each box contains and display what customers can expect. Many subscription boxes websites allow you to view boxes that reveal what was included in previous shipments.

If you can’t determine if the value is higher than the price of the subscription box, or if a poor-quality website may reflect the quality of the products, move on. It’s best to look elsewhere for a more trustworthy subscription model.

Also, Take a Look at Your Suppliers

Once you’ve found the right subscription box for inspiration, keep in mind that you won’t necessarily need to be the one fulfilling the orders for each subscription. Before you get too deep in your journey of how to start a subscription box business, you need the right suppliers. Your supplier should have fulfillment centers that help simplify this process. You can also work with manufacturers who will customize designs, put each subscription box together, and ship them to your customers.

Create a Landing Page That Fully Illustrates the Value of the Subscription Box

influencer creating an unboxing video

When you’ve created the right box, it’s time to begin selling it. One of the first steps to take is to develop a strong landing page. Make sure it highlights the features and value of the box. In most cases, you should try to find a box with a retail value of at least $50 per box.

One small tip to help you sell your subscription box to customers is to use an unboxing video that clearly shows what’s included in each box. You don’t have to make one yourself. You can work with an influencer. They’ll produce an unboxing video for you. Then you can use it on a landing page that customers will be able to see. A brief unboxing video can go a long way in helping sell those boxes.

Avoid Selling the Subscription on the Front End

screen grab of Peter Pru discussing how to sell specific products and use subscription boxes as an upsell

Before you try to sell your subscription, it’s important to entice customers with a specific product. Don’t try to sell a subscription right from the start of the sales funnel. Instead, create a funnel that begins with selling a single product that will encourage people to buy more from you.

From there, they may be more likely to subscribe to your box. Upsell with a simple offer such as, “Do you like our product? Give our subscription box a try.” If the customer liked that first product, they’ll probably consider your subscription plan. Subsequently, you’ll save more money as you essentially earn those customers for free.

By looking at the many subscription boxes out there in your niche and pinpointing the value they offer vs. the price they charge, you can craft the right subscription box for your ecommerce business. Remember, you need to show the value of what your customers are getting. Then, you’ll be a lot more likely to increase sales and maximize profitability with recurring revenue.
